Edison Mail Partners with ZecOps Amid Rise of Email Security Threats, Announces New Feature for iOS to Trust Email Read on Edison Mail

Edison Mail users can safely continue using the app without interruption or worry about new exploits.

  • Today Edison Mail announced a new partnership with cybersecurity firm ZecOps in which the company will proactively monitor potential new email vulnerabilities in the app for iOS, 24/7, and in real-time.

  • Edison Mail app for iOS was tested and verified by ZecOps that the app is not vulnerable to a new malicious email vulnerability their team recently discovered.

  • Edison Mail also announced plans to release a new email feature coming to iOS in June to combat rising email threats.

Recently, new email security challenges have cropped up, as many scammers are targeting the inboxes of consumers and businesses — exploiting emotions like fear and compassion related to COVID-19. This week, a large-scale and very active business email compromise campaign targeting companies and concerns over the pandemic made headlines. Last month saw coronavirus scammers soliciting donations via impersonator emails and a multinational scam involving fake email addresses to trick health authorities into buying $16 million worth of face masks that didn’t exist. Google also reportedly saw more than 18 million daily malware and phishing emails related to COVID-19 scams in just one week in April.

Our team at Edison Mail strives to give consumers confidence that their security is always our highest priority and that our email app is doing everything possible to protect them. That’s why we are announcing a new partnership with the ZecOps cybersecurity team in which the company will proactively monitor potential new email vulnerabilities in our Edison Mail app for iOS, 24/7, and in real-time.

The new partnership with ZecOps will continuously review vulnerabilities and signs of tampering with the app, adding additional layers of protection to Edison Mail. With this new and constant scrutiny for potential emerging email security threats, Insights from ZecOps DevSecOps crash analysis open-source SDK, CrashOps, will allow Edison to discover and respond to vulnerabilities as quickly and efficiently as possible.

We are also pleased to share that our Edison Mail app for iOS was added to ZecOps’ list of email software that is not vulnerable to a new malicious email exploit their team recently discovered impacting a major email provider.

In April, ZecOps found evidence of an exploit being used against at least six high-profile targets on iOS, including an executive at a mobile carrier in Japan, individuals from Fortune 500 companies in North America, and several others. The flaws allowed a hacker to remotely infect a device simply by sending it a specially-crafted email, which was activated by the victim simply opening the message. Upon discovering the threat, ZecOps reported it had “high confidence” that the vulnerabilities had been exploited in the wild by “advanced threat operator(s).”

Since ZecOps’ discovery of the exploit, the affected email provider released a beta patch to block these vulnerabilities from further abuse once deployed.

Additionally, next month we will release a new email security feature on Edison Mail for iOS (with Mac and Android support coming later this year), offering a warning to consumers about suspicious or fake emails before they are allowed to enter your inbox. Unlike other email providers that only warn you about a suspicious email after it has arrived, Edison Mail will be the first email app to give the consumer control to review and accept an email that is marked as suspicious. If the Edison Mail app considers an email sender is fraudulent, it will not download the email by default and will trigger a warning to the user first. Senders that use certain email patterns have a higher chance of being malicious and unlike traditional spam filters, Edison Mail’s security feature has proprietary algorithms that will detect the suspicious details embedded inside email headers that other email providers miss, to avoid posing risk to consumers.

The app will go as far as checking the email registration service to determine if an email address is suspicious and warn consumers before they allow it into their inbox. Advanced text detection will identify whether email sender identity and email addresses are correct for a routine sender or befitting other imposter and spoof messages.

Email Security Continues to Be Critical in 2020

Email is home to some very sneaky tactics to exploit security, and most everyday consumers do not have the benefit of a corporate IT or security department trained to help them avoid these threats. In a 2019 report published by Verizon that examined thousands of security incidents, almost all (94 percent) instances of malware arrived via email.

Last summer, Edison Mail shared with Forbes how our app can help combat email security threats with features like Block Read Receipts and Block Sender. Intelligent features like Touch ID and Face ID protection, are built into our apps to help preserve your privacy. Edison Mail is also protected by one of the world’s most advanced security infrastructures. The app is safeguarded by multiple layers of security, including AES 256 encryption.

At Edison, we work hard to help protect consumers from malicious email efforts, for example, phishing scams, by blocking the signals scammers use to identify consumers who are active and likely targets. By blocking read receipts scammers will not focus follow up on consumers even if they are reading the scammers’ messages. Instead, they will move on to another target.

No doubt, email security threats will continue to become more sophisticated over time, and it’s up to all of us to ensure we take as many precautionary measures as possible to stay safe.
